False lashes can transform any makeup look, but applying them can be tricky. With practice and the right technique, anyone can master the art of false lashes.
Types of False Lashes
Strip Lashes
Full band of lashes applied across entire lash line. Best for beginners and dramatic looks.
Individual/Cluster Lashes
Small groups of lashes applied in sections. More natural look, longer application time.
Magnetic Lashes
Attach with magnetic liner or magnetic strip. Easier application, reusable.
Choosing the Right Style
For Natural Look
- Wispy, varied lengths
- Clear or thin band
- Similar length to natural lashes
For Dramatic Look
- Full, dense lashes
- Longer length
- Winged/cat-eye style
For Your Eye Shape
- Round eyes: Winged styles to elongate
- Almond eyes: Any style works
- Hooded eyes: Shorter, natural styles; heavy lashes weigh down
- Downturned eyes: Outer corner emphasis to lift
What You’ll Need
- False lashes
- Lash glue (waterproof recommended)
- Tweezers or lash applicator
- Small scissors
- Mascara
- Mirror (magnifying helps)
Step-by-Step Application
Step 1: Prepare Your Lashes
- Remove lash from tray gently
- Hold against your eye to measure
- Trim from OUTER edge to fit (inner lashes are shorter)
- Bend band into C-shape to make flexible
Step 2: Apply Mascara First
- Curl your natural lashes
- Apply one coat of mascara
- This helps false lashes blend and adhere
Step 3: Apply Glue
- Apply thin line of glue along lash band
- Add extra dot on each end (they lift first)
- CRUCIAL: Wait 30-60 seconds until glue becomes tacky
- Glue should look slightly clear/matte, not shiny
Step 4: Place the Lashes
- Look down into a mirror (easier positioning)
- Using tweezers or fingers, place center of lash first
- Get as close to natural lash line as possible
- Press inner corner down firmly
- Press outer corner down firmly
- Hold for 10-20 seconds
Step 5: Blend and Perfect
- Once dry, gently press false and real lashes together
- Apply eyeliner to hide the band
- Apply final coat of mascara to blend
Common Mistakes & Fixes
Lash Won’t Stick
Problem: Applied glue too wet
Fix: Wait longer for glue to get tacky
Ends Lifting
Problem: Not enough glue on ends
Fix: Add extra glue to inner and outer corners
Lash Too Far From Lash Line
Problem: Applied too high
Fix: Look down into mirror, get as close to lash line as possible
Looks Unnatural
Problem: Didn’t trim to fit or wrong style
Fix: Always measure and trim; choose natural styles
Removal Tips
- Never pull lashes off!
- Soak cotton pad in oil-based remover
- Hold on closed eye for 30 seconds
- Gently peel from outer corner inward
- Remove glue residue from band
Making Lashes Last
- Clean glue residue after each use
- Store in original case
- Handle by band, not lash hairs
- Quality lashes last 10-15 wears
- Never apply mascara directly on false lashes (shortens life)
Beginner-Friendly Alternatives
- Half lashes: Apply only to outer corner
- Magnetic lashes: No glue required
- Lash clusters: Add to sparse areas only
- Pre-glued lashes: Glue already applied
Practice makes perfect! Try applying lashes at home before a big event. Soon it’ll become second nature.
